Accordion Mini & Typewriter Image | Tutorial

The mini I made in this post is really versatile.  Whether you make it this size for 4" x 6" tags & prints or reduce the size to have it hold wallet-sized tags & prints, the possibilities are endless.  I've made minis like this to hold inspirational quotes, pictures of my spring tulips, and as a "who/what/where/when/why" vacation mini - and most recently, as a perpetual reminder calendar!

Here's what you'll need to get started on yours:

Evalicious goodies:
(12) 6" x 9-1/2" patterned papers, scored 2-1/2" in from each short end (see pictures below)
(12) 1" x 4" patterned papers, scored down the middle and trimmed (see pictures below)
(12) 4" x 6" cardstock
(2) 4-3/4" x 6-1/2" light cardboard
(4) 4-3/4" x 6-1/2" patterned papers
(12) 3-3/4" x 5-3/4" perpetual calendar prints (I made my own)
ribbon, twine, ink, paint, punch, alpha stickers as desired

6" x 9-1/2" patterned papers, scored 2-1/2" in from each short end:  They should overlap 1/2", which is where to put your adhesive.  Yes, I run it along the entire length... you want this mini to hold together!
1" x 4" patterned papers, scored down the middle and trimmed:  I love that little Evalicious round tag as a photo pointer!  The point here is that you need to trim these strips so that the folded edge is the longest edge.  Just eyeball this - no one will really see this, but it's a little trick to make the final product look more polished.
Pocket construction:  Adhere the 1" x 4" folded and trimmed strip to the bottom of the 6" x 9-1/2" folded and taped pocket.  Use a circle punch to give your tag embellishments a place to stick out of.  Placement of this is more important - be consistent.  You'll see why in later steps.  The Evalicious photo pointer is pointing out both sides of my calendar tags.
Pocket assembly:  Once all the pockets are made, run another length of adhesive from the edge of the added strip - BUT NOT ON the added strip - to the edge of the punched hole.
Pocket assembly:  Stick one pocket to another with one strip of adhesive as shown previously... you should end up with a fun accordion like this!
Mini assembly:  Cover the light cardboard with the papers for the back cover, inside back cover, and inside front cover - BUT NOT the front cover.  The Evalicious photo pointer is showing that the ribbon is attached ONLY to the front cover with adhesive, under the front cover paper.  Once the ribbon is attached, add the paper to the front cover and then stick the covers to the pockets using the same method the pockets attach to each other.
Mini is done!  Now... to embellish the gee-whiz out of the tags.
Tag embellishment:  I honestly just sat down with the Documented bundle and a few extra badge buttons and dealt them out like cards into twelve piles.  Used some alpha stickers for the month names, wrote on a few of the little tags, and tied up some twine bows.  Easy peasy!
Tags are done!  I was careful to not have the badge buttons stack up in the same spots, but otherwise, there's no real science to sticking it all together.
Now for that typewriter image.  I used a Versafine ink because the stamped image will resist water... because I had the intention of painting a little.  But I think an embossed image would work just fine, and maybe even better.

You'll notice multiple stamped images and lots of different products in the photos below.  Although I could have used the magic of hindsight to show you what I ended up with, I wanted to show you that sometimes you really do just have to play with ideas and products to figure out what's going to work.  Oh, and have fun.  Because this is supposed to be fun, right?  *big grins*
I was going after an image stamped on colored paper, but somehow have a page come out of the typewriter in white so I could stamp a sentiment on it.  I had no idea what was going to work, but I thought some careful painting would get me the white I was after.
From upper left, clockwise:  Pearl-Ex paint, Distress Stain, straight acrylic, watered down acrylic.  The straight acrylic ended up the best... and I could hit it with an exacto blade to clean up where I colored over the lines.
The great thing about having samples... is that I had a way to practice stamping the sentiment on the image!  I use an "antique" Stamp-a-majig for alignment like this - and they are still made and sold today.  Otherwise, just plan on making multiple images and taking a few tries at it.
Feeling inspired to dive into some great Evalicious products now?  Well, when you do, don't forget to post your work in our Evalicious Flickr pool here. We will be selecting a project that catches our eyes every few weeks and award the artist with a gift card code to spend in the shop!
