How to do the foil technique

Found these cool foil paper at a local upcycle store and included them in this year's Christmas art journal. Here's one way to use it:

1. Pull out a page from your art journal that you'd like to use this technique on. I chose a vintage book page. Along with the foil, double sided tape and scissors.

2. I'm making a frame with the foil so that I can later add a photo on top when I make an entry page. Apply double sided tape like above. Peel off sticker backing.

3. Apply foil sheet (non-shiny side down) on top of the book page.

4. Rub foil with finger tips on top of where the double sided tape runs.

5. Gently lift foil off of book page. There may still be parts of the adhesive where the foil material did not adhere on it.

I just lay the foil back down again and rub a little more until I'm happy with the effect. The tape doesn't have to be covered completely with metallic foil - makes it look more worn and vintagey that way. Some foil may not stick as well as others unfortunately - maybe it depends on your tape too.

For those of you who didn't get a kit, I'm not sure where you would buy these foil sheets - sorry!

Instead of a frame, you can also cut up pieces of double sided tape to create a shape then apply the foil.

If the foil is being stubborn, another way to use it is to simply cut it into strips and staple it onto an entry and use it like a ribbon (or glue it on). You can even add strips of journaling on top of it after:).

  1. These foils are super cool..I can't seem to remember where I found them because I've had them for a few years.

One really fun technique is to stamp an image and heat emboss with heat&stick powder then rub the foil over the image and the foil will stick to the embossed portion.

    Happy Thanksgiving!!!

  3. I think it's gold foil used for gold leaving. I think you can find it at Michaels or Opus, in sheets or kits.

  5. Great idea! I decided to cut my double sided tape into thin strips and outline the star included in the kit and foil the star! It looks great!
